George Boyd has ended speculation about his future by signing a new three-year deal with Peterborough United. The 24-year-old midfielder, who had a year remaining on his previous deal, was widely expected to quit London Road after Posh's relegation to League One.

Boss Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Credit to Peterborough for turning it right around.

"It's a bonus I wasn't expecting. The last week or so it became clearer he was willing to listen."

Boyd spent the final three months of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, but only played six games while at the City Ground.

Posh fans were braced for an offer from a Championship club for the former Stevenage man, but chairman Darragh MacAnthony and director of football Barry Fry were able to persuade him to stay in Cambridgeshire.

"We'd like to think he was happy with the new players he had seen come in," added Johnson.

"Barry, the chairman and myself have been speaking to him for a little while and the lad seemed happy again."

Posh lost 2-0 to Portuguese First Division side Olhanese on Saturday in their first pre-season friendly.

Meanwhile, youngsters Danny Mills and Romone McCrae are spending time with Histon and could join the Blue Square Bet Premier side on loan.
