Mackail-Smith was hauled off after just 35 minutes at home to Ipswich last month and spent the next two games out of Gannon's starting XI - but returned to score against the Blades.
Gannon said: "Craig grew in stature from the start and the goal seemed to spur him on.
"He took a lot of punishment during the game but looked as though he was really enjoying being out there.
"Craig has done enough in that 90 minutes to ensure he stays in my plans. Some people seem to think I have a problem with certain players at this club but I can assure them that is not the case."
