Peterborough United boss Gary Johnson says he has nearly decided who will be in his starting line-up for the upcoming League One season.Despite recent friendly defeats by West Ham and Aston Villa, Johnson has been delighted with the performances of his new squad.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I can't pencil in my 11 that will play against Bristol Rovers.

"But I certainly know the 14 or 15 that right now are competing for a place."

If you get a group of good footballers who are all committed then generally you get what you want, and that's what we've got

He added: "I've been really pleased with the boys' performances against West Ham and especially Aston Villa.

"We actually raised the bar against Aston Villa and played with a good tempo throughout."

Johnson also said that he is beginning to see his training methods benefit the team on the pitch.

"If I can stand on the sidelines and recognise the game we've been working on all week then I know we're getting somewhere," he said.

"If you get a group of good footballers who are all committed then generally you get what you want, and that's what we've got."

However Johnson said he was disappointed with the side's 4-1 defeat at League Two side Gillingham on Tuesday, when he included several fringe players.

"It was a poor overall performance but we used it for some of the players who haven't been involved to get them a game," he said.

"We also played some of the young lads and some lads we're looking at."
