Peterborough manager Barry Fry did a small gig of delight on the touchline at the final whistle after his team ran out 2-1 winners at Bournemouth, ending a run of 13 matches without a win.

Peterborough stormed into a two-goal lead early in the match but were obliged to defend desperately near the end after the hosts had pulled a goal back.

It was Bournemouth’s first home defeat of the season but, while Peterborough were forced to hold on in the second half, they still had enough chances to have won by a bigger margin.

Peterborough were given a perfect start in the seventh minute when Leon McKenzie seized on a bad mistake in defence by Karl Broadhurst before scoring with a powerful left-foot shot.

McKenzie was involved again in the 21st minute at a free-kick by Andy Legg for Curtis Woodhouse to score with a left-foot shot from the edge of the area.

Bournemouth struggled to find their rhythm, but Mark Tyler did well to keep out a firm header from Broadhurst just before the break.

McKenzie should have added a third in the 49th minute when he latched on to a bad back pass from Carl Fletcher, only for Neil Moss to race from his line to make a fine block.

Peterborough continued to waste chances with Simon Rea seeing a header from a Legg corner cleared from the line by Stephen Purches and McKenzie shooting wide from 10 yards.

Gradually Bournemouth began to get back into the match and on 74 minutes Warren Feeney latched on to a headed pass from Steve Fletcher to score with a right-foot shot from 15 yards.

Marcus Browning and Jason Tindall hung their heads in shame after failing to find the target from 10 yards in each case as Peterborough rocked.

Bournemouth had three players booked in the last seven minutes as their pressure became more intense but somehow Peterborough clung on to three precious points.
