Andy Clarke earned Peterborough United a precious point with a late equaliser at Colchester.

Posh had fallen behind to a stunning volley from Kemal Izzet in the last minute of the first half, and they were under the cosh early in the second half as the hosts searched for a killer second goal.

Yet that second goal never came and Peterborough took full advantage in the 82nd minute. Substitute Dave Farrell powered past Karl Duguid down the left flank and delivered a cross which Clarke fired home on the turn.

It was an excellent finish giving Simon Brown little chance as it fizzed into the far corner of the net. It was his 13th goal of the season.

Visiting manager Barry Fry had opted for a very defensive formation from the start, packing his team with four centre-halves including Colchester old boy Sagi Burton who was playing out of position in midfield.

Not surprisingly, Colchester took control and both Duguid and Joe Keith should have done better from free kicks.

Yet Colchester did take the lead when a corner was only half-cleared to Izzet, who volleyed home sweetly from the edge of the box for his 23rd goal of the season.

Veteran Mick Stockwell should have made the game safe early in the second half when slicing a volley wide from point-blank range.

Scott McGleish, who used to play for Peterborough, rattled the post with a shot in the 55th minute and was then denied by a good block from keeper Lee Harrison.

However, Peterborough manager Fry gambled by playing four up front for much of the second period and this worked a treat with Clarke's excellent equaliser.

Leon McKenzie, making his first appearance of the season following a broken ankle, almost netted a late winner for Posh when home keeper Simon Brown saved a low shot with his legs.
