Both Notts County and Peterborough United stretched their unbeaten league run to five after this rip-roaring East Midlands derby at Meadow Lane.

It was dominated by two uncompromising defences who made sure that neither goalkeeper was seriously extended throughout.

Right to the finish it could have been won by either side, but a draw was a fair reflection of the contest which lacked quality but not excitement.

Notts began more brightly and the first chance fell to defender Dan Gleeson. The newly arrived stopper has made a considerable impact since signing on with the Magpies and when he forged forward, it was to finish with a shot which rose over the crossbar.

The next opportunity was also County's and fell to veteran striker Jason Lee, hungry for a goal against one of his former clubs. Andy Parkinson set up the opportunity for him, only for Lee to finish with a shot wide of Mark Tyler's post.

When Peterborough hit back their best chance fell to Chris Plummer, who lifted the ball over the crossbar, with home keeper Kevin Pilkington for once left exposed.

The early stages of the second half were more scrappy then anything which had gone, before a moment of real controversy ignited the proceedings afresh.

Austin McCann played the ball into the penalty area, where Lee was pushed as he went to meet it, only for referee Grant Hegley to wave away strong Notts claims for a penalty - presumably because he and his own assistant were united in not seeing an infringement.

In the closing stages chances became slightly more plentiful. First Junior Mendes got clear and drove in a hard low shot, which, on his six-yard line, Tyler did well to get behind.

The final chances, however, were Peterborough's, first Guy Branston up on his attack, headed inches wide of Pilkington's upright and then Trevor Benjamin floated the ball across the goalmouth, where Posh were unable to find a finishing touch.
