Notts County halted Peterborough's rush towards a club record equalling ninth successive league victory with a spirited rearguard action at London Road.

Although on the defensive for almost the entire game, relegation-threatened County's resistance never faltered and, in a second-half twist, they might even have snatched a goal. Yet, ironically, County are now closer to the drop-zone after the three teams below them all won!

The first half easily belonged to Posh although they had nothing to show for all their possession at the break.

Top marksmen Aaron McLean and Craig Mackail-Smith - who signed a new four-and-a-half year contract before the game - both had efforts blocked in one sustained spell and when the ball finally reached George Boyd, his low drive was pushed away by County goalkeeper Russell Hoult.

Craig Morgan headed over the top from a Dean Keates corner and, after doing well to create space, McLean saw a shot on the turn flash across goal and beyond Hoult's left-hand post.

With the hard-working Keates and Posh skipper Micah Hyde picking up everything in midfield, County found it hard to break out of defence, and when Michael Johnson went forward to send a header over the bar, he was penalised for pushing.

County did not force their first corner until the 58th minute but almost broke the deadlock eight minutes later. A corner from Wayne Corden, making his debut following his on-loan move from Leyton Orient, was headed on by Michael Edwards and Johnson's shot from point-blank range was deflected when keeper Joe Lewis flung his body in the way.

Posh again upped the pace, and while Keates and McLean went close, County refused to concede and things got no better for the hosts despite the introduction of substitute strikers Liam Hatch and Scott Rendell.
