Stockport 2 Peterborough 1

In-form hitman Luke Beckett was on fire for Stockport County as they ended their miserable run of late with an important victory at home to Peterborough United.

The Sheffield-born striker increased this season's tally to 11 goals with well-taken efforts in the 13th and 61st minutes, as the home side triumphed 2-1.

County should have taken the lead after five minutes following some impressive build up play which stemmed from defensive lynchpin Carlton Palmer.

Palmer's pin-point long ball picked out Kevin Ellison who volleyed first time across goal, only for Jon Daly to see his sliding shot cannon off the crossbar.

And just a minute later Stockport's leading scorer Beckett missed a glorious opportunity from inside the six-yard box after a superb ball from Ali Gibb on the right wing.

But Stockport got their just rewards with 14 minutes on the clock when Beckett scored at the second attempt after the Posh defence had made a mess of a clearing.

The club's leading hitman made no mistake from inside the six-yard box to leave Peterborough keeper Mark Tyler with no chance.

Crewe manager Dario Gradi was a notable face in the Edgeley Park crowd, and if he had been in to take a sneaky look at either of County's strikeforce, who his team will have to contend with at the weekend when both sides meet in the league, he would have probably walked away an unhappy man.

Beckett and Daly worked their socks off for the home side and it was richly deserved that at least one of them stole the praise and got on the scoresheet in this entertaining encounter.

Beckett got his second just after the hour, converting another Gibb cross, after the visitors were reduced to ten men with the sending-off of Matthew Gill for a foul on Kevin Ellison.

Peterborough, unbeaten in their last five outings, had not won at Stockport since 1996, when they beat the Hatters 1-0.

Even a late goal from Andy Clarke couldn't help Barry Fry's team grab a share of the spoils as County jumped seven places in the table and the Posh surrendered their impressive unbeaten run
