Clayton keen for Posh improvement

Peterborough United loan man Adam Clayton is hoping to help trigger an upturn in results during his month-long stay at London Road. Thanks to the FA Cup, followed by the cold snap, the 21-year-old has made just two appearances since joining Posh from Leeds United on 19 November.

But he still has two games left to try and help Posh improve on their current run of one win in six league matches.

"I've come in to ignore the lull they've been going through," he said.

Clayton, who was only signed by Simon Grayson for Leeds from Manchester City in August, spent most of last season at this level, on loan with Carlisle United, making 31 appearances.

"I've played in League One before," he said, "so I felt much more confident stepping out in front of the Posh fans than when I first played for Carlisle.

"This loan move came about really quickly," adds Clayton, who has made just four substitute appearances for Leeds owing to injury.

"Posh were interested and the gaffer at Leeds told me it would a good opportunity to go out and get some games."

After making his Posh debut as a second-half substitute in the 4-1 defeat at Southampton, Clayton then started for the first time in the 2-2 home draw against Orient. But he has now spent a frustrating fortnight on the sidelines.

He did not play in the 2-1 FA Cup second round win at Bury, as Leeds did not want him cup-tied, and snow then forced the postponement of last Saturday's trip to Yeovil.

If this weekend's scheduled home game with Rochdale goes ahead, Clayton's loan spell is due to end following the trip to Dagenham on 18 December.

But he is open to extending his stay, to help Gary Johnson's Posh, currently in 10th, three points off the play-offs, push back up the League One table.

"Gary Johnson is brilliant to work with," he said. "He gets an arm around your shoulder and keeps you going.

"All the lads here like him. He's a very good manager, so I think I can learn a lot from him.

"You learn different things under different managers. Here, they want me to play one and two touch and keep it moving."
