Scots call-up for Mackail-Smith

But the former Dagenham & Redbridge forward qualifies for Scotland through a grandmother.

Scotland coach Levein had been left short of striking options following the withdrawal of Steven Naismith.

Levein had said earlier: "We have had call-offs and areas in the team that are a bit more threadbare than others.

"There is a possibility that later on this week I might make moves to bring another player in."

Goalkeeper Cammy Bell, who recently lost his place in the Kilmarnock team to Anssi Jaakkola, was called up earlier in the week to replace Everton's Iain Turner.

Sunderland full-back Phil Bardsley also did not travel to the squad's five-day gathering in La Manga after his knee injury was assessed.

And Naismith remained behind with groin and hamstring strains after Sunday's Co-operative Insurance Cup final win over Celtic, although the forward has since stated that he expects to be fit for Rangers' next game.

Celtic skipper Scott Brown travelled to Spain despite pulling up with an injury during his side's defeat at Hampden.

Meanwhile, West Brom midfielder James Morrison is determined to feature at the weekend, despite needing stitches after a clash of heads during his side's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

Some of the articles we've seen suggest James has defied club orders, but that could not be further from the truth

West Brom statement

"You don't often get the chance to play against Brazil and test yourself against them," he told his club website.

"I think there are eight or 10 stitches in my head. It hurt like hell, but you get them in football."

West Brom played down a report that Morrison had travelled with the Scotland squad against their own doctor's orders.

"Some of the articles we've seen suggest James has defied club orders, but that could not be further from the truth," said the Premier League outfit.

"James was scheduled to fly up to Scotland on Saturday night, but due to the fact he was suffering from concussion, we thought it would be wise to delay his flight until Monday.

"This decision had the full backing of the Scottish FA's medical department and James has now linked up with the Scotland squad and is preparing for the Brazil friendly.

"Due to the fact we have two Scotland internationals at the club - James and Graham Dorrans - we have developed an excellent relationship with Scotland's medical department and they were more than happy with how we handled James' situation last weekend."

The Scottish Football Association also dismissed the newspaper reports.

Houston hopes to avoid more call-offs

"He's got stitches but has shown his commitment to the national team by coming out and hopefully he will be okay for the game," said a spokesman.

"The two doctors speak to each other so there is no issue."

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher misses out through injury and striker Kenny Miller may therefore retain the captain's armband after leading the side to a 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland last month.

Miller is playing for Bursaspor in Turkey on Monday evening and will fly out to Spain after the match, while midfielder Murray Davidson must get through St Johnstone's Scottish Cup replay with Brechin on Tuesday.

The absence of Naismith left Scotland with Miller the only striker in the squad having regular international experience.

Assistant manager Peter Houston said: "We've got plenty of days before the weekend in case we need to bring anybody else in."

The Dundee United boss revealed that the players will be afforded some leisure time on Monday and Tuesday before getting down to the business of taking on Brazil.

"At this time of the season, players have played a lot of games and done an awful lot of work, so we'll look after them over the first few days," he explained.

"But, from Wednesday onwards, we will build towards trying to get a good result against Brazil."
